Tools that aid in the Productivity of Pizzeria’s
I’ve worked in several restaurants and pizzerias, and from my experience, I can say that the biggest enemy of productivity is inadequate and faulty equipment. When we think of productivity, we generally think of employee production, but an individual’s production is merely a cog in the wheel of the machine. It takes a team to create positive production. That being said, a team is only as good as their tools allow them to be. Without proper equipment, production moves slowly, wasting both time and money. Here are some tools and ideas to better productivity and save time and money.
Knives, blenders/mixers, containers, coolers, freezers, warmers – all of the aforementioned tools are essential to pizzerias, and improper maintenance of tools can really hold you back! Making sure knives are sharp, coolers and prep tables are working correctly will ensure you have the necessary products to run smoothly and efficiently. If your equipment is constantly breaking down, it can cost you money in lost product and be frustrating to staff. Maintenance is critical!
Even if you have covered all the bases of proper tools and technology, those tools can be rendered useless in the hands of people with little experience. Providing a thorough orientation day for new employees and scheduling monthly or quarterly refresher meetings will help with your employee’s knowledge and expectations of your pizzeria. Identify employees that are exceptional at their duties, and leverage their knowledge and experience to train incoming staff properly.
Pizzerias have high employee turnover rates, so utilizing your long-term dedicated employees will help with new employees. Offering seasoned employees titles such as trainer will help motivate your employees to work harder and alleviate some of your duties as a pizzeria owner. A lot of employees take pride in being able to train new employees. Making in-house video tutorials and giving quizzes over company standards are fun ways to build relationships with your employees and will help pay off in the long term.
Keep up with the innovation in the pizzeria industry! (International Pizza Expo is a great place to check out the latest and greatest!) New technology is making point of sale and management of inventory and labor as easy as pushing a button.
Having the ability to know when your restaurant will have busy days and slow days is essential to the productivity and efficiency of your pizzeria. This piece of valuable information helps when it comes time to decide on the number of employees you will have for the day and make weekly food ordering more accurate. Streamlining this process all from one device is essential for successful and productive pizza restaurants. For savvy modern pizzeria owners, a POS system is necessary.
Let’s not forget about technology in the kitchen. There are new technologies popping up all the time. New oven technologies are able to cook pizzas quicker and cleaner. Bluetooth enabled sensors can help monitor food temps and send an alert if food is out of range. There is even a start-up company in California called Zume which is using automation in the kitchen.
Productivity creates more productivity! As a pizzeria owner, if you produce the right tools and make sure they are used correctly you will have a more productive, and less costly business. Hopefully, these ideas will help you pinpoint areas that are slowing production and costing you money. For more helpful articles on managing your pizzeria stay tuned to the Thrive Pizza blog.
